On August the 17th 1853 John Hope Shaw, the then Mayor of Leeds, laid the foundation stone for Leeds Town Hall. Into a cavity within the foundations he placed a sealed bottle containing gold and silver coins. The mayor spread mortar with a silver trowel, squared and levelled the upper stone, struck it three times and said:

'Thus and thus and thus, I lay the foundation stone of the new Town Hall of Leeds.'

It is this dramatic gesture that is the catalyst for new artwork by local artist Stephen Ward. Stephen takes inspiration from the city around us and particularly Leeds rich industrial heritage. The work which is installed within the display window at the Headrow/ side entrance to the Library will be on show during Light Night and for two weeks hence.
